September 15, 2011

The Brooklyn Hospital Center welcomed Hesham Taha, MD, this summer as our new Director of Palliative Care Services. A Board Certified hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Taha specializes in the treatment of pain and other symptoms such as nausea, insomnia and loss of appetite.

Dr. Taha joins Bronwyn Rucker, LCSW, who provides palliative psycho-social services at the hospital.

With each passing year treatments for cancer and other serious illnesses advances, improving outcomes and adding years of life. Yet groundbreaking treatments like chemotherapy and radiation can cause a variety of unwanted symptoms that can be treated by a palliative care specialist.

Serious illness can also cause emotional and spiritual pain, as patients face the potential loss of life, disfigurement and the inability to live independently. Dr. Taha, Ms. Rucker and other palliative care team members address these issues in a culturally sensitive way, helping to relieve many of the hardships faced by seriously ill patients and their families regardless of background.

Funding for the Palliative Care Consulting Service is generously provided by The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, Inc.
