On January 30, 2012, The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC) received notification from the New York City Police Department that a list of a number of TBHC patients was found in the possession of a suspect during the course of a police investigation. The information had been printed from the Hospital’s billing system and included patient names, addresses, telephone numbers, medical record numbers, date of birth, and in some cases Social Security Numbers and Medicaid numbers. No medical or health information was included.
TBHC has sent individual letters to the patients on the list for whom it has an address. However not all patients have addresses in our system, and some of the addresses may not be current. For this reason, we are posting this information on our website.
The Brooklyn Hospital Center deeply regrets that this incident occurred. The Hospital is still investigating how its billing system information was disclosed. The Hospital is also examining its information security program to strengthen data security and privacy protections to further strengthen the Hospital’s approach and commitment to patient privacy.
If you have any questions at all about this incident, you may call the TBHC Privacy Officer toll free, at 855-635-6110.
