History of The Brooklyn Hospital Foundation

The year was 1839. Brooklyn was a city already 200 years old, with a population of 138,882. Cyrus P. Smith was Mayor, and except for an almshouse in Flatbush, there was no hospital in Brooklyn. One spring day, a gentleman from Buffalo broke a leg on Fulton Street, near City Hall. Mayor Smith, who witnessed the accident, realized that there was no place to take the stranger. So after having the man taken to a private house nearby and cared for at his expense, he began to talk to his friends of a new idea. Augustus Graham, Henry E. Pierrepont, A.A. Low, William Packer, and others shared the Mayor's vision and six years later, on May 8, 1845, The Brooklyn City Hospital was incorporated--the first voluntary hospital in Brooklyn.

Getting started was not easy. One account tells of a fundraising meeting at the Brooklyn Institute where $95 was collected. Nonetheless, the need for a hospital was so severe and the resolve of its founders so sure that, in 1846, Augustus Graham and other trustees purchased a two-story frame house on Hudson Avenue for $2,600, and on December 10, 1847, The Brooklyn City Hospital admitted its first patient.

By 1848, there was enough money contributed to purchase a plot of 74 lots, at $200 per lot, on DeKalb Avenue near old Fort Greene. On June 11, 1851, the cornerstone was laid by Mrs. Augustus Graham, whose husband--by then deceased--had contributed the total of $38,000 required to build the 160-bed hospital that has become The Brooklyn Hospital Center.

Some 60 years later, in 1910, a group of immigrant Scotsmen led by Donald G. C. Sinclair, similarly motivated by the spirit of voluntarism and service to their community, resolved to construct a hospital, Caledonian Hospital, to provide basic health care in Flatbush and central Brooklyn, where none existed at the time. A wood-frame mansion at Parkside Avenue and St. Paul 's Place was converted to a 25-bed hospital and Caledonian opened its doors with a dedication to serve patients regardless of race or creed.

In 1982, The Brooklyn Hospital and Caledonian Hospital merged to become one hospital and in 1990 officially became The Brooklyn Hospital Center.

For 160 years, successive generations of Brooklyn leaders have acted to address the ever changing healthcare needs of the people of their borough. Through the decades, they have extended the frontiers of medicine, kept pace with advancing technologies, built and enhanced facilities, merged existing institutions to expand services, and developed new programs to serve their neighbors. The dream of Brooklyn 's first hospital has been fulfilled in the actions of countless individuals who have understood the importance of serving the people of Brooklyn.

Today's leaders are no less committed to the dream they have inherited. Their task is to plan for health care's future even as they stand at the brink of reform. Ahead are unprecedented challenges and uncertainties for the Hospital Center. Planning for the future will require a new vision, new resources and renewed courage to remain a leader.

The 160-year-old dream is alive and The Brooklyn Hospital Center's plan for the future will create new opportunities for protecting and improving the health of Brooklyn. Now is the time to continue to dream as well as to act; to believe as well as plan. It will require the involvement and support of all who believe in The Brooklyn Hospital Center and share dreams for its future.

"To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe."
ANATOLE FRANCE

Annual Campaign

When you make a gift to The Brooklyn Hospital Foundation’s Annual Campaign, you join a select group of people who help save lives, heal and care for patients, comfort their families, teach good health, meet new challenges, and bring innovative healthcare to Brooklyn.  All contributions to the Foundation support The Brooklyn Hospital Center and its mission.  Every gift, no matter the size, helps TBHC deliver excellent healthcare to all, irrespective of their ability to pay.

Money from the Annual Campaign is used to support specific, important projects within The Brooklyn Hospital Center. For example, campaign funds helped us acquire a state-of-the-art Medical Simulation Center. Using computers and technologically advanced mannequins, the facility helps our residents and nurses-in-training to perfect a variety of diagnostic and clinical skills before performing them on real patients.  In other years, funds from the Annual Campaigns paid for pediatric sleeper chairs and a wayfinding signage system enabling easy hospital navigation.

In 2011, the Foundation, using a portion of the 2010 Annual Campaign funds, initiated a grant-making program through which individual departments were able to apply for grants to fund equipment or a program that enabled them to improve patient care.  A portion of the 2012 campaign funds will be directed to projects that employees themselves identify as being critical to best patient practices

Toy Drive

Auntie Lu's Toydrive

[57] [57]Toys and games are crucial for helping children cope with medical procedures, physicians' office visits, and hospital stays. Play becomes a valuable and safe outlet for expressing feelings. Imagine being admitted to the hospital for one week out of every month. When children are diagnosed with cancer or a serious blood disorder it can be a full time job.

Sometimes these children require monthly, weekly or even daily visits to the hospital. These children endure frequent blood tests and invasive procedures. Each blood test or procedure is mitigated by a small prize. Most children who are crying from pain are able to smile when they are given a small toy.

The older children use videos, DVDs and computer games to distract themselves and pass the time.

Your gift to “Auntie Lu’s Toy Box” will keep a child occupied and happy during a turbulent time in his or her life. Toys must be brand new and should not be gift wrapped. Monetary donations also will help us purchase additional gifts for our very special children. With your financial help, we will be also able to supply a full scope of services to relieve families’ emotional and financial stress, from a simple cup of coffee, to lounge chairs, to family counseling and more.

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology eagerly accepts donations of new toys, games, and other items. Due to infection control standards, we cannot accept donations of used stuffed animals or used toys.

DONATION GUIDELINES

Thank you for your interest in the children at The Brooklyn Hospital Center.  We hope the following guidelines help you to prepare for your donation or upcoming toy drive.  When choosing items to donate, please remember we care for children of all ages – birth through 21 years old.

Toy distribution varies—Toys can either be distributed to the children on the day of the visit, used to restock the playroom, stored to be given out for birthday gifts or long hospital stays or rewards for bravery after difficult procedures.  As a safety precaution, all toys must be inspected by the Child Life staff prior to being distributed.  If you would like the toys to be given out by a Child Life staff member on the day of your donation, please bring approximately 7 toys for each age group listed below.

If you are interested in making a donation and want  to donate something other than toys, here are a few ideas for alternative drives:  Sticker/Kid Band-Aid Drive, DVD Drive, Arts & Crafts Drive, Personal Care Item Drive (deodorant, underwear, lotions, hair brushes, etc.)

Remember, all items must be NEW AND IN THE ORIGINAL PACKAGING.

Unfortunately we can not  accept any of the following items:  stuffed animals, food items, latex balloons, toy guns or items that promote violence, or religious items.

Graduate Medical Education Fund

The Brooklyn Hospital Center's commitment to outstanding Graduate Medical Education spans more than 150 years. Dr. Walter E. Regardless of when you graduated, you may be proud of the contributions you made toward advancing Graduate Medical Education at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. Today our hospital sponsors more than 250 residents and fellows each year who train in a diverse range of medical specialties.

2012 The Brooklyn Hospital Foundation Golf Classic and Dinner

Swinging in the Rain!

Tuesday October 2nd, 2012 at the Dyker Beach Golf Course

Our Gratitude

Thank you so much for participating in The Brooklyn Hospital Foundation’s Annual Golf Classic and Dinner; it was truly a day to remember.

While the weather proved to be challenging, we were overwhelmed by the wholehearted support and camaraderie of our hospital community. We at the Foundation are so lucky to have friends who play such an integral role in furthering the important mission of The Brooklyn Hospital Center. Together we netted over $30,000. Those proceeds will go to supporting TBHC’s mission.

Congratulations again to those of you who played well and left the course dripping with success!

Teeing Up For Next Year

Information on The Brooklyn Hospital Center Foundation’s 2013 Golf Classic and Dinner will be coming in the following months. Be sure to check back as we look forward to seeing many familiar faces next year along with a few new ones.
