Toy Drive

Auntie Lu's Toydrive

[1] [1]Toys and games are crucial for helping children cope with medical procedures, physicians' office visits, and hospital stays. Play becomes a valuable and safe outlet for expressing feelings. Imagine being admitted to the hospital for one week out of every month. When children are diagnosed with cancer or a serious blood disorder it can be a full time job.

Sometimes these children require monthly, weekly or even daily visits to the hospital. These children endure frequent blood tests and invasive procedures. Each blood test or procedure is mitigated by a small prize. Most children who are crying from pain are able to smile when they are given a small toy.

The older children use videos, DVDs and computer games to distract themselves and pass the time.

Your gift to “Auntie Lu’s Toy Box” will keep a child occupied and happy during a turbulent time in his or her life. Toys must be brand new and should not be gift wrapped. Monetary donations also will help us purchase additional gifts for our very special children. With your financial help, we will be also able to supply a full scope of services to relieve families’ emotional and financial stress, from a simple cup of coffee, to lounge chairs, to family counseling and more.

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology eagerly accepts donations of new toys, games, and other items. Due to infection control standards, we cannot accept donations of used stuffed animals or used toys.

DONATION GUIDELINES

Thank you for your interest in the children at The Brooklyn Hospital Center.  We hope the following guidelines help you to prepare for your donation or upcoming toy drive.  When choosing items to donate, please remember we care for children of all ages – birth through 21 years old.

Toy distribution varies—Toys can either be distributed to the children on the day of the visit, used to restock the playroom, stored to be given out for birthday gifts or long hospital stays or rewards for bravery after difficult procedures.  As a safety precaution, all toys must be inspected by the Child Life staff prior to being distributed.  If you would like the toys to be given out by a Child Life staff member on the day of your donation, please bring approximately 7 toys for each age group listed below.

If you are interested in making a donation and want  to donate something other than toys, here are a few ideas for alternative drives:  Sticker/Kid Band-Aid Drive, DVD Drive, Arts & Crafts Drive, Personal Care Item Drive (deodorant, underwear, lotions, hair brushes, etc.)

Remember, all items must be NEW AND IN THE ORIGINAL PACKAGING.

Unfortunately we can not  accept any of the following items:  stuffed animals, food items, latex balloons, toy guns or items that promote violence, or religious items.
