Internal medicine is the medical specialy concerned with the diagnosis, management and nonsurgical treatment of unusual or serious diseases. The Department of Internal Medicine provides the finest primary and subspecialty medical care to the community while continuing a tradition of quality graduate medical education. Areas of specialization include:
The Division of Allergy and Immunology offers a broad range of diagnostic and treatment options in allergies and immunologic diseases.
An allergy is an exaggerated immune response [20] or reaction to substances that are generally not harmful.

Allergies are relatively common. Both genetics and environmental factors play a role.
The immune system normally protects the body against harmful substances, such as bacteria and viruses. It also reacts to foreign substances called allergens, which are generally harmless and in most people do not cause a problem.
But in a person with allergies, the immune response is oversensitive. When it recognizes an allergen, it releases chemicals such as histamines. which fight off the allergen. This causes itching, swelling, mucus production, muscle spasms, hives [27],rashes [28], and other symptoms, which vary from person to person.
Common allergens include pollen, mold, pet dander, and dust. Food and drug allergies are common. Allergic reactions can also be caused by insect bites [29], jewelry, cosmetics, spices, and other substances.
Some people have allergy-like reactions to hot or cold temperatures, sunlight, or other environmental triggers. Sometimes, friction (rubbing or roughly stroking the skin) will cause symptoms.
A specific allergy is not usually passed down through families (inherited). However, if both your parents have allergies, you are likely to have allergies. The chance is greater if your mother has allergies.
Allergies may make certain medical conditions such as sinus problems, eczema [24], and asthma worse.
Allergy symptoms vary, but may include:

The Brooklyn Hospital Center is at the forefront of new technologies in colonoscopy [59] and endoscopy [59]. We have highly advanced endoscopes, which make procedures faster and more effective while greatly minimizing discomfort. We are the first hospital in New York City equipped with the THIRD EYE Retroscope, which gives physicians an advanced retrograde view of the colon, illuminating blind spots and improving polyp detection during colonoscopy. We are also one of the first facilities in New York State to use the EVIS EXERA III endoscopy system, which uses next-generation Narrow Band imaging for enhanced observation of mucosal tissue. This technology has dual-focus capabilities that allow physicians to switch the depth of field from normal focus to near focus for more detailed observation of suspected lesions. Enhancements provided by the THIRD EYE Retroscope and the EVIS EXERA III system help detect colorectal cancer and other GI diseases at their earliest stages.

We welcome patients with undiagnosed diseases and conditions.
Do you suffer from an unexplained gastrointestinal (GI) problem such as abdominal pain, nausea, difficulty swallowing, rectal bleeding or an unexpected change in bowel habits?
Our Board Certified Gastroenterologists are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of complex illnesses of the GI tract.* Utilizing an all-digital endoscopy [59]suite and other Brooklyn Hospital Center resources, they’ll help find the cause of your problem and develop a treatment plan that works for you. Some of the many diseases and disorders we treat include:
Upper Endoscopy [59] – helps diagnose cause of abdominal pain, cause of upper GI bleed and saves lives by enabling control of bleeding, also allows for removal of foreign body impacted in the esophagus
Colonoscopy [59]– aids in colon cancer screening, enables removal of pre-cancer and early cancer lesions in the colon, helps diagnose and control bleeding in cases of lower GI bleed, and aids in the diagnosis of causes of diarrhea such as infection, inflammatory bowel disease and microscopic colitis
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) – aids in the diagnosis of bile duct disease, saves lives by allowing drainage of infection in patients with ascending cholangitis (infection of the bile duct), and improves quality of life by relieving jaundice and itching in patients with bile duct obstruction from advanced pancreatic cancer
Endoscopic Ultrasound – special endoscopic imaging which helps in closely visualizing abdominal organs such as pancreas, bile duct and surrounding structures
Esophageal Manometry – helps diagnose and treat motility disorders of esophagus
Capsule Endoscopy – helps diagnose small bowel disease such as blood vessel malformation, colitis and ulcerations
Colonic stent – prevents obstruction in cases of advanced colon cancer
Esophageal Stent and Dilation – improves difficulty in swallowing in patients with strictures and advanced esophageal cancer
The Brooklyn Hospital Center is not only Brooklyn’s first hospital; it’s also home to one of the borough’s oldest fully accredited Gastroenterology Fellowship [72] programs. Thanks in part to this long tradition of scholarship and original research, our patients receive the most informed, up-to-date GI treatments available.
TBHC uses all-digital endoscopy to take highly detailed images of the upper and lower GI tract.
Most endoscopies [59]take just 10-20 minutes and overnight stays are rarely required.
Training doctors to become highly skilled and caring gastroenterologists is an important goal of our division. We have several fellows in our fully accredited 3-year Fellowship Program [72]. All of these students are under the supervision of our division chief, full-time gastroenterologists and voluntary specialists.

Nephrology at The Brooklyn Hospital Center covers the entire spectrum of diagnosis and treatment of kidney problems. Services are provided in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
On an inpatient basis, consultations are provided on a wide range of kidney problems including hypertension [101], diabetes [102] and kidney failure [103]. Outpatient consultations and office visits are provided by our nephrologists in a private office setting. We place a strong emphasis on treating patients with hypertension and diabetes at an early stage in order to avoid progression to kidney failure.
Our primary goal is to preserve the patient's remaining kidney function in order to avoid the need for dialysis in the future. Those patients who have kidney failure are treated in the Dialysis Center. In addition, we have a home peritoneal dialysis program. Our dialysis program is now treating over 200 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) [48]. Our clinical outcomes have been excellent; we are in the top 15% of dialysis units in the country.

An acknowledged leader in pulmonary care and education, The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC) has become the consultant of choice for general internists and family medicine physicians throughout Brooklyn.
Working in partnership with your primary care physician (PCP), our Board Certified Pulmonologists offer a broad range of services, from routine asthma care and COPD treatment to the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, interstitial lung disease and acute lung injuries.
Nationally recognized for quality patient care. TBHC’s Division of Pulmonary Medicine is a proud recipient of the 2009/2010 HEALTHGRADES Pulmonary Excellence Award, which recognizes TBHC as one of America’s top ranking providers of pulmonary services.
TBHC’s Board Certified Pulmonologists are specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, disorders and injuries of the lung and bronchial tubes. They’re here to help if your condition remains undiagnosed or hasn’t responded to conventional treatment.
Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT) help your physician determine how much air your lungs can
hold, how quickly you can move air in and out of your lungs, and how well your lungs add oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from your bloodstream.
Because we emphasize education and research as well as clinical care, many of the newest technologies and procedures in lung care are available right here in our downtown Brooklyn campus.
To heal properly, you need to take your medications the right way. Our Board Certified Pulmonologists will work with you until you fully understand what medicines you’re taking and why. They’ll also make sure you can properly operate any medical devices you may need such as an inhaler or face mask.
Sleep is a cornerstone of good health. Poor sleeping can lead to low productivity, hypertension, depression and other disorders.
If you can’t get through a night without waking up, consider scheduling an overnight stay at The Brooklyn
Hospital Center. We’ll observe you and electronically monitor the changes your body and brain undergo
during sleep.
Sleep Lab patients stay in a very comfortable, homelike environment. Please call 718.250.8224, email

Since the 1940s, urology at The Brooklyn Hospital has been an independent department. It was established by Dr. Frank Ham who, at that era, was one of America 's foremost urologists. Dr. Ham was author of a well-regarded urological surgery textbook and was famous for mastering the art of the TURP for BPH and refining the technique of the perineal prostatectomy for prostate cancer. He was succeeded by another urologist with a national reputation, Dr. Keith Waterhouse, who later became the chairman at SUNY-Downstate Medical Center. Dr. Aizid Hashmat became chairman of the department of Urology in 1989 and under his leadership the department has expanded to include 5 full-time Urologists and 3 voluntary urologists who together provide the full range of urological services. Currently Department of Urology is under the leadership of Dr. Dhanan Etwaru who has been guiding it into the 21st century.

Our staff consists of 5 full time physicians, 2 voluntary physicians, 1 hospital based provider, 1 chief resident from the SUNY-downstate medical center. We provide a diverse scope of services and each faculty maintains their own interest and subspecialties including laparoscopy and oncology, female urology, pediatrics, infertility, and erectile dysfunction.
Our attendings are clinical faculty at State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center and we maintain an active interest in research. Our staff has published a textbook on penile disorders and together we have over 100 publications and presented abstracts in leading journals and international conferences.
We treat the more new patients with cancer than any other service at The Brooklyn Hospital. Last year we performed over 300 major cases, 1700 minor procedures. In our office and clinic we managed over 8500 patients last year. We currently utilize state of the art equipment to treat stone disease and also use the laser for treatment of BPH.
Our attendings meet on a regular basis for academic conferences and to determine how we can improve service to our patients and sit on multiple committees in the hospital to oversee positive changes to the hospital. In short, we have combined experience and forward thinking to establish our position as one of the leading providers of urological health care in New York.
