Pediatric Hematology/Oncology

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncolgy at The Brooklyn Hospital Center was established in 1991 to provide state-of-the-art medical care to children and adolescents affected with blood disorders [10] and cancer [11]. The division is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of three Board-Certified pediatric hematologists, two registered nurses, a social worker, a child-life specialist, a school teacher, an office manager, a clinical research assistant and a community outreach coordinator. This highly trained team of professionals provides care in a friendly and pleasant environment and assists in improving quality of life for our pediatric patients.

Additional Services

Sickle Cell Program — The program at The Brooklyn Hospital Center cares for over 350 children and adolescents with sickle cell disease [12] and other hemoglobinopathies. Our program includes 24-hour attending physician coverage, a 9 hour/day (Monday through Friday) infusion room facility, and a consistent team of dedicated caregivers.

Children's Oncology Group (COG) — We are an active affiliate member of COG, a national cooperative group that works with over 200 member institutions to help prevent and cure cancer in children and adolescents through scientific discovery and compassionate care. As a member of COG, we are able to offer an opportunity for our patients to participate in the latest clinical research trials. Clinical trials are research studies designed to help us answer specific questions regarding the nature of the disease and to evaluate various treatment options.

Pediatric Genetics

The Genetics Department provides state-of-the art services for prenatal diagnosis and carrier screening. A wide range of people may benefit from the genetic services offered at The Brooklyn Hospital Center including those requiring:

- Assistance with children with mental disabilities, developmental delays, learning disabilities and growth problems

- Diagnosis of suspected genetic syndromes

Pediatric Specialty Services

Hematology/Oncology

We are able to provide much of the pediatric care that a child would need without going anywhere else. For example, our hematologist/oncologists are part of the Children's Oncology Group and can treat most forms of cancer [25] right here in Brooklyn. For therapies that would be better provided elsewhere, we can coordinate so that care can still be provided locally.

Infectious Diseases

Our infectious diseases pediatricians have a strong focus in microbiology and vaccine research. We see both hospitalized patients and patients referred by other health care providers. In addition we conduct research in new drugs, new vaccines [26], and new ways of making diagnoses.

Cardiology

The Pediatric Cardiology [27] service sees patients in an office setting and on the Pediatric and Neonatal inpatient units. We offer a wide variety of noninvasive diagnostic modalities including electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, fetal echocardiogram, Holter monitoring, and exercise stress tests. Cardiology maintains a close relationship with both campuses of Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian. This facilitates the referral of patients to these campuses who may require more invasive cardiology services including cardiac catheterization and cardiac surgery.

Ambulatory Care

Ambulatory Care services are offered in a group practice setting. In this model, a specific physician and resident will be responsible for your care. These physicians will be associated with teams so there is always continuity of care, even if you designated physician is out.

Our pediatricians provide care to infants through adolescents in child-friendly settings within The Brooklyn Hospital Center and at our La Providencia Family Medicine Center (718.455.9000) and the Williamsburg Family Medicine Center (718.599.6200). Services range from well-child care to treatment for a variety of diseases and conditions.

The Children's Health Center provides primary care and well-child medical care--including immunizations and school physicals--to children of all ages. Each child is followed by his or her own physician. Several physicians are available, including an adolescent specialist and a Certified Nurse Practitioner.

Day and evening appointments are available.

Inpatient Care

Our inpatient service has 25 beds. These services are staffed by a team of specially trained hospital-based physicians along with our pediatric specialists and an excellent team of nurses.

We also have a program in Pediatric Surgery. Many community physicians refer patients to us for inpatient care. During the hospitalization, we are in frequent communication with those doctors and we send the patients back to those physicians once they no longer need hospitalization.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is staffed by leading physicians, nurse specialists, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. The 18 -bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides long and short-term care to premature and sick newborns. It is staffed by full-time Neonatologists as well as nurse practitioners and physician's assistants.

The NICU as well as the Pediatric Special Care Unit can provide transport to our center for critically ill newborns, children and adolescents.

Many of our patients are admitted through the Pediatric Emergency Room, which provides care for acute illnesses and injuries 24 hours a day/7 days a week. It is separated from the adult emergency room, making the experience easier for the child. The Pediatric Emergency Room is under the leadership of a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Specialist. In his absence, a pediatrician specializing in treating children in the hospital setting is always available.

Meet The Staff

Kenneth Bromberg, MD, FAAP, FIDSA
Chairman, Department of Pediatrics

Dr. Kenneth Bromberg is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases. He studied at SUNY Stony Brook as an undergraduate, and received his MD from SUNY Buffalo (1975). He did his residency at NY Hospital/Cornell Medical Center (1975-1978) and was trained in both pediatric and adult infectious diseases at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island (1978-1980).

After spending 23 years at Downstate/Kings County, he moved to the Brooklyn Hospital Center as Chairman of Pediatrics. He is also Professor of Pediatrics at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He is a member of the Society for Pediatric Research and the Academic Pediatric Asociation, a reviewer for the National Institute of Health, and a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

He directs the Vaccine Research Center at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. His research interests are laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases, congenital infections, and use of computers in medicine. Dr. Bromberg is available for consultation in all areas of Pediatric infectious diseases (718-250-6935).

Stephen Ajl, MD

Dr. Ajl is from Philadelphia where he graduated form the University of Pennsylvania and then subsequently went to Temple Medical School. He came to us from Downstate Medical Center. Prior to being at Downstate Dr. Ajl was the Director of the Pediatric Out-patient department at Mt. Sinai in Manhattan and was there for eight years. At Downstate Dr. Ajl continued his ambulatory care work and developed his specialty in child abuse/child advocacy. Dr. Ajl is the director of The Children’s Health Center. His career has focused on the ambulatory care aspects of Pediatrics. Dr. Ajl is also a forensic pediatrician. His area of expertise is Child Abuse. During his career Dr. Ajl has been involved in the evaluation of several thousand children who have been abused and has worked closely with Child Protection Services, the Police Department and the District Attorney’s office. Dr. Ajl brings us a wealth of experience in evaluating child with suspected abuse and neglect. He is the medical director of the Brooklyn Child Advocacy Center which is a multidisciplinary site where children who have been sexually abused can have a comprehensive evaluation. Dr. Ajl has also convened a network of providers of care for children who have been abused. The group is the Brooklyn Consortium for the Protection of Children. It has about 70 members and meets to discuss difficult issues relating to child abuse and also acts as a forum for experts in the filed to present new ideas to the group.

Sung Lan Chung, MD

Dr. Sung L. Chung is a member of the Ambulatory Care faculty. She has been an active and committed member of the department for the past 35 years. She also holds the position of Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Cornell Medical College. Over the years Dr. Chung has been active in all areas of the pediatric department. These days her energy is focused on her teaching and patient care responsibilities. She is one of the preceptors in the resident continuity care practice and is also the medical provider at St. Francis School for the Deaf.

Cynthia Katz, MD

Dr. Cindy Katz has recently joined our department as the Associate Residency Program Director, and as a member of the Ambulatory Care Faculty. She received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University, her medical degree from SUNY Downstate, and completed her residency at the Children’s Hospital of New York, of Columbia Presbyterian. She is enjoying working closely with the housestaff and medical students and is excited to be back in Brooklyn serving the children of Kings County. She joins Dr. Ajl in practice and welcomes new patients.

Vipul Kothari, MD

Dr. Kothari is a graduate of our residency program. After his graduation he worked in several hospitals in the Brooklyn area and was in private practice in Maryland before returning to the Brooklyn Hospital center where he has been am member of the Ambulatory care faculty for the 13 years. During has tenure at The Brooklyn Hospitals Dr. Kothari worked in many of our ambulatory sites. He has worked in physician’s offices, Caledonian Hospital and has been involved with our pediatric foster program as well. Dr. Kothari is one of the supervisors of the house staff in their continuity practice and his years of experience are a valued asset to all.

Howard Lantz, MD

Dr. Lantz has been a member of the Brooklyn Hospital Ambulatory Care faculty for the past three years. He supervises the house staff continuity practice and is the provider of care to several of our foster care agencies. Dr. Lantz has been very involved with the quality improvement project that our house staff has been involved in. He came here after working at Health Insurance Plan (HIP) for the past 20 years. He has brought a wealth of clinical experience in dealing with the everyday problems of children.

M. Voddi, MD

Dr. Voddi is a graduate of the pediatric residency program at the Brooklyn Hospital Center. She received her medical degree with distinction from Ross University School of Medicine. Since joining as an attending physician with the pediatric department, she has worked with patients in the Pediatric Emergency Department and has recently joined the Ambulatory Care Clinic as well. In addition, she joins Dr. Ajl and Ms. Daniele as part of the medical arm of the multidisciplinary team at the Brooklyn Child Advocacy Center, where she performs the medical evaluations of children referred for physical or sexual abuse.

Dr. Voddi is board-certified in general pediatrics. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Sub-committee on the Abuse and Neglect of Children. She also belongs to the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children and the Brooklyn Consortium for the Protection of Children.

Louisdon Pierre, MD

Dr. Louisdon Pierre completed his pediatric residency at Beth Israel Medical Center and his fellowship in critical care at Schneider Children's Hospital of Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He is board-certified in both general pediatrics and pediatric critical care.

In addition to his role as chief of the section of critical care medicine, Dr. Pierre directs the pediatric inpatient and pediatric sedation services. He is a member of the New York Society of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Pierre's clinical interests include respiratory care and management of mechanical ventilation.

Adebayo Adeyinka, MD

 

A native of Lagos, Nigeria, Dr. Adeyinka's specialties include Pediatric Sedation and Analgesia, Sepsis and Septic shock, Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, and Disseminated intravascular coagulation ( DIC).

 After completing medical training in the former USSR, Dr. Adeyinka completed a residency in Pediatrics in Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center in Brooklyn (2005). He continued with fellowship training in Pediatric Critical Care at the Long Island Jewish North Shore Health System – Schneider Children's Hospital. He graduated in 2008 as Chief Fellow and subsequently joined the Department of Pediatrics at The Brooklyn Hospital Center.

Priya Tatachar, MD

Dr. Priya Tatachar completed a pediatric residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn and is board certified in General Pediatrics. Her early medical education was in Bangalore, India where she graduated with MBBS degree. She worked with developmentally disabled children at the Spastics Society of Karnataka before coming to USA to pursue her pediatric residency. She is currently working as a hospitalist in the ER, NICU and special care areas. Her clinical interests include childhood neurlogical and developmental disorders.

Noah Kondamudi, MD, FAAP, FACEP, DM, DCh

Dr. Kondamudi graduated from Osmania Medical College, India in 1980 and migrated to Jamaica, West Indies in 1981. He worked at the Cornwall Regional Hospital, Montego Bay for three years as Pediatric Resident and completed Diploma in Child Health from the University of West Indies, a program that emphasized community pediatrics. He then moved to the University Hospital in Kingston to do a formal residency program and completed the Doctorate in Pediatrics there in 1987 under the tutelage of Dr. Richard Olmsted, the founding president of Ambulatory Pediatric Association (APA). After a brief six month stint as a research associate at the sickle cell unit of the MRC Labs, Dr. Kondamudi worked as the Pediatician in charge of Emergency Department at the Bistamante Hospital for Children in Kingston, Jamaica. He was then deputed to Grenada, West Indies as the sole pediatrician for the island in the aftermath of the US invasion of Grenada.

After serving in Grenada for three years, he rejoined the University of West Indies at the Cave Hill campus in Barbados as a Lecturer in Pediatrics where he taught the medical students and was in charge of the post graduate pediatric program there.

Desirous of pursuing a fellowship program and to meet the requirements of the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr Kondamudi moved to the US in 1993 and joined the Department of Pediatrics at the Brooklyn Hospital Center as the chief resident. He then joined the Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship program in 1994 at the Montefiore Children's Hospital, Bronx, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and graduated in 1996.

He then returned to the Brooklyn Hospital Center as the Section chief, Pediatric Emergency Services and has been serving in this capacity ever since.

Dr. Kondamudi is board certified in both General Pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. He was instrumental in expanding the ED from a 3 bed cubicle to a well equipped 8 bed unit plus 3 asthma chairs, including a critical care area. The Pediatric ED is now fully staffed round the clock with a trained pediatrician ready to meet the needs of the community as well as those of the practicing pediatricians. Dr Kondamudi is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics and serves on the executive committee of the Brooklyn Pediatric Society. Dr Kondamudi holds the academic rank of Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, Weill College of Medicine-Cornell University. His interests include acute asthma, injury prevention and enhancement of quality of care in the Emergency Department.

Manjulla Chatterjee, MD

Dr. Manjula Chatterjee completed her pediatric residency from Brookdale hospital Medical Center in 2004 and is board certified in pediatrics. She completed her pediatric endocrinology fellowship from Schneider Children Hospital of Long Island Jewish Medical Center and is now a full-time employee at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. Her areas of interest encompass all aspects of hormonal disorders including diabetes, growth, thyroid, puberty and adrenal disorders. She trained under Dr. Phyllis W. Speiser, a reknowned pediatric endocrinologist with expertise in management of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Dr. Chatterjee co-authored a paper with her on severe hypercalemia which was published in Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2007. Dr. Chatterjee received Genentech fellowship award for her research work on analysis of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring amongst adolescents with type 1 diabetes. She is a also a member of Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and The Endocrine Society.

Fred Gilbert, MD

My clinical interests are broad, encompassing dysmorphia (unusual appearance), unexplained retardation/developmental delays, family histories of genetic problems, genetic disorders in populations, and cancer genetics.

Patients who should be referred for genetic evaluation include those with unexplained developmental/speech delays, or mental retardation. Also, children who have striking physical features with developmental delays, including small head size (microcephaly), and those with drug or alcohol exposure in utero, or a family history of children with developmental/speech delays, or a family history of chromosome abnormality. Patients with features of Marfan syndrome (a connective tissue disorder), including tall stature, spider hands, joint laxity (double jointed), heart murmurs, pigeon breast, scoliosis, or any of the above, should be referred for evaluation. Patients who should also be referred for genetic consultation include parents who have a child with congenital malformations (cleft lip and/or palate, congenital heart, congenital dislocated hips, etc.) or a family history of children with problems, or multiple pregnancy losses. And anyone about whom questions are raised concerning genetic risks or diagnosis.

Abraham Jelin, MD

Dr. Abraham Jelin fulfilled his pediatric residency at Grady Memorial Hospital, Montefiore Medical Center and Brookdale Hospital. He completed a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at Emory University School of Medicine. He is board-certified in both general pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology.

In addition to his role as chief of pediatric gastroenterology, Dr. Jelin is the associate chairman of pediatrics and a member of the advisory board of the professional staff. He is a member of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition; the American College of Gastroenterology, and treasurer of Chapter 2 of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Jelin has a special clinical interest in feeding problems.

Swayam Sadanadan, MD

Dr. Swayam Sadanandan is the Associate Chair of the Department of Pediatrics as well as chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. A native of Bombay, India, Dr. Sadanandan received a medical degree from L.T.M. Medical College, Bombay University,with M.B.B.S, M.D. (Pediatrics). She completed her pediatric residency training at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in New York City, and a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship program at New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Sadanandan is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

Before joining The Brooklyn Hospital Center in 1991, Dr. Sadanandan served at Booth Memorial Medical Center as Associate Director of Pediatrics for 10 years. In her current role at The Brooklyn Hospital Center she has developed the largest pediatric hematology-oncology practice in Brooklyn. She is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine.

Dr. Sadanandan has had numerous papers published in scientific medical journals including "Crossed Immunoeletrophoresis of Human platelet Membranes,” which appeared in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, and “Splenic Rupture in a Newborn with Severe Hemophilia—Case Report and Review,” which was published in the Journal of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Sickle Cell Thalessemia Patients Network Appreciation Award, the first annual Women Wish Makers Award from the Make A Wish Foundation, the Caring for our Children Leadership Award from the American Cancer Society, and The Brooklyn Hospital Center’s own Walter Reed Medal of Honor.

Dr. Sadanandan is a member of the American Society of Hematology and the Brooklyn Pediatric Society, a board member of Make A Wish Foundation of Metro New York and a Fellow with the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Aziza Sedrak, MD

Dr. Sedrak is a pediatric hematologist and oncologist who treat all the different cancers that occur in infants, children, and adolescent. Her research efforts are focused on the study of the complications of sickle cell disease mainly pulmonary hypertension. Currently she is interested in discovering a way to prevent and treat this serious complication. She went to medical school at the Alexandria Medical College in Egypt and did her residency at NY Methodist Hospital. She did her fellowship at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn.

Sarah Rawstron, MD

Dr. Sarah Rawstron was born in London, United Kingdom. She trained in the United Kingdom attending medical school at Churchill College Cambridge (1977-80) for pre clinical studies, and then attended Kings College Hospital Medical School for clinical studies (1980-83). After one year as a house physician and house surgeon, she started a pediatric residency at Kings County Hospital and SUNY Downstate Medical Center in July 1984. She completed her residency in June 1987, after becoming a chief resident in December 1986. Dr. Rawstron then did a fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Kings County and Downstate Medical Center (1987-1990). Following this she joined the pediatric department at SUNY Downstate as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics.

Her interests include congenital infections (particularly diagnosis and treatment of congenital syphilis), sexually transmitted diseases in children, and vaginitis in children. In January 2005 she moved to The Brooklyn Hospital Center too serve as the Pediatric Residency Program Director.

Patrick LeBlanc, MD

Dr Patrick E Leblanc was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, and attended medical school in Haiti. He completed a residency in Pediatrics at Harlem Hospital and a neonatal fellowship at Downstate Medical Center. He joined the section of neonatology at The Brooklyn hospital in January 1992. He is board certified in Pediatrics and the sub-board of Neonatal Perinatal Medicine.

Belen Fineza, MD

Dr. Belen Fineza obtained her Medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. She completed her Residency in Pediatrics at Maimonides Medical Center & her Fellowship in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine at Downstate Medical Center. She was an Attending Neonatologist at Metropolitan Hospital Center for 12 years. In 1994, she came back to Brooklyn to join the Section of Neonatology of The Brooklyn Hospital Center. She is board certified in Pediatrics and the sub-board of Neonatal Perinatal Medicine.

Rose Mary Daniele, FNP

Rose Mary Daniele was born and raised in New York City. She received undergraduate degrees from Barnard College and Long Island University, both in NYC. She became a Family Nurse Practitioner in 1993 upon receiving her MSN from Pace University. She worked at Kings County Hospital Center from 1994 until 2004 in ambulatory pediatrics, gaining experience in the area of child sexual abuse evaluations.

In January 2005, Rose Mary became a member of the department of pediatrics at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, providing outpatient care at La Providencia Family Health Center in Bushwick and at the Jane Barker Brooklyn Child Advocacy Center, which is a multidisciplinary site for the evaluation of children with suspected sexual abuse. She has special interest and expertise in the field of child protection. She is board certified in family health and is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, The Nurse Practitioner Association of New York, the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, and Child Abuse Medical Providers. She is fluent in both English and Spanish.

Inacia Besada, MD

Dr. Inacia Besada was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She graduated from the Rio de Janeiro State University-medical School in 1988. She completed a Pediatric Residency in Brazil from 1988 until 1990 and then practiced pediatrics in Rio de Janeiro for five years. She came to the United States in 1995 and joined the Pediatric Residency Program at Winthrop University Hospital where she completed a fellowship in Pediatric Ambulatory Care. She works at the Williamsburg Health center and also teaches residents at the main Brooklyn Hospital Campus. She is Board certified in Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Besada has special interest in Community Pediatrics. She is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and English.

Melissa Guillaume, MD

Dr. Melissa Guillaume, is a Pediatric Cardiologist with a distinguished academic and clinical record of achievement. After graduating from Brooklyn College, Dr. Guillaume attended Penn State University Medical School in Hershey. She completed her pediatric residency at SUNY Downstate. She then went on to complete the renowned Cardiology Fellowship Program at New York University.

Lewis Krata, MD

Dr. Lewis Krata is happy to join the Pediatric Staff at Brooklyn Hospital.  He attended Brandeis University as an undergraduate and went onto Tufts University School of Medicine.  After eight years in the Boston area he moved to Manhattan where he spent seven years training at Mt. Sinai Hospital.  He was a Pediatric Resident, Chief-Resident, and finally a Pediatric Rheumatology Fellow.  All of this culminated in his completing his Board Certification in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Rheumatology.  

He then went to work at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan until its recent closing.  While there he was director of Pediatric Rheumatology, seeing patients in the faculty practice. He was an Attending in the General Pediatric Clinic supervising residents, and in his last year he acted as a Hospitalist as well.  Additionally he was coordinator of Pediatric Medical Education and completed a Primary Care Research Fellowship at New York Medical College.  He also served on staff at The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC) as the Pediatric Rheumatology consultant for several years.

He comes to TBHC full time now as chief of Pediatric Rheumatology as well as director of In-Patient Services and director of Medical Student Education.   He looks forward to serving the patients of King’s County as well as the surrounding boroughs.  Aside from Pediatric Rheumatology he is interested in Child Safety and Medical Education.  He is also an active member of Reach-Out-and-Read of Greater New York and has served on the Benefit Committee for many years.

• Dedicated Child-Life Specialist. Whether the child is with us for one day or one year, our Child-Life Specialist will work with him or her, and the parents, to reduce the trauma. Discomfort and pain that can accompany a hospital visit.
• Pediatric Sedation/Analgesia. Our PICU Attendings are experts at sedating children to prepare them for difficult procedures such as EEG, CT Scan, MRI, bone marrow aspiration and intrathecal chemotherapy.
• Clinic for Children with Special Healthcare Needs. We are experts at caring for technologically dependent children, including children on home ventilators and other respiratory devices as well as feeding devices. We also support children with chronic illnesses in need of infusions.
