OVERVIEW
The REI Fellowship at The Brooklyn Hospital Center is a three-year program that prepares physicians for leadership in reproductive medicine through academic scholarship, clinical innovation and advanced procedural training. The curriculum integrates comprehensive clinical experience, assisted reproductive technology (ART) and abundant research opportunities.
Fellows train in a collaborative academic environment that emphasizes sound clinical judgment and progressive autonomy. They gain broad experience in diagnosing and managing complex reproductive endocrine disorders, infertility and advanced fertility needs across a diverse New York City patient population, developing the skills to deliver patient-centered, culturally competent care.
Clinical training is grounded in direct mentorship at Kofinas Fertility Group, a specialized ART center with expertise in complex infertility care. Fellows gain hands-on experience in ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), fertility preservation and recurrent pregnancy loss evaluation, as well as the management of conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, diminished ovarian reserve and endometriosis. Training also encompasses ultrasound-guided interventions, reproductive laboratory interpretation and advanced laparoscopic and reproductive surgery, including laparoscopic myomectomy and surgical treatment of severe endometriosis.
Research and scholarly development are integral to the TBHC-Kofinas Fertility Group REI Fellowship. As the sponsoring institution, The Brooklyn Hospital Center provides the academic foundation for a structured research curriculum, complemented by Kofinas Fertility Group’s specialized clinical focus. Fellows have opportunities to design and conduct clinical research, prepare manuscripts, present scholarly work and participate in national meetings. This emphasis on evidence-based practice and original investigation encourages fellows to contribute to the continued advancement of reproductive medicine.
Serving a diverse population in the heart of New York City, The Brooklyn Hospital Center offers fellows exposure to a broad spectrum of reproductive health needs, clinical presentations and cultural perspectives. In partnership with Kofinas Fertility Group, the program combines the breadth and rigor of a teaching hospital with specialized experience in innovative fertility care, fostering the clinical expertise and cultural responsiveness needed to manage complex reproductive conditions.
Throughout the fellowship, trainees benefit from structured didactic education, interdisciplinary collaboration, close faculty mentorship and increasing responsibility in patient care and procedural training. Faculty at both institutions are committed to advancing fellows’ professional development, academic productivity and career aspirations.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE
The TBHC–Kofinas Fertility Group REI Fellowship offers a distinctive, surgically intensive training experience at the forefront of reproductive medicine. Within a dedicated, high-volume reproductive surgery center, fellows gain hands-on experience with advanced, fertility-preserving procedures that are not typically concentrated within traditional fellowship programs.
From the outset, training emphasizes complex minimally invasive surgery, including advanced laparoscopy, operative hysteroscopy and precision ultrasound-guided interventions. Exposure to challenging cases involving severe endometriosis, fibroids and complex fertility-related pathology enables fellows to develop the technical proficiency and clinical judgment required to manage demanding surgical presentations.
This surgical experience is integrated with advanced reproductive care, including IVF and fertility preservation, allowing fellows to develop their command of surgical innovation and contemporary fertility treatment. The program’s integrated approach prepares trainees to advance the field through clinical excellence and innovative thinking.
Fellows work alongside the multidisciplinary team at Kofinas Fertility Group, including reproductive endocrinologists, OB/GYN specialists, embryologists, geneticists and dedicated nursing and support staff. This physician-led, collaborative environment provides first-hand experience in delivering comprehensive fertility care through individualized treatment planning and coordinated clinical decision-making.
Together, The Brooklyn Hospital Center and Kofinas Fertility Group offer an educational model that combines the academic rigor of a teaching hospital with the specialized mastery of a dedicated fertility center. This partnership connects hospital-based training with specialized reproductive practice, equipping fellows with the clinical, surgical and scholarly foundation to become leaders in the evolving field of reproductive medicine.
